Frafra’s Sustainability
Frafra exists to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of artisans in Ghana through skilled handwoven collections. We are dedicated to promoting sustainable practices, empowering artisans, and fostering economic growth within the communities we serve.

Our products are made from Veta Vera grass-a durable, renewable material grown locally in Ghana. Each basket is handwoven using traditional, low-impact techniques. We produce in small batches to avoid waste and prioritise biodegradable materials across our products and packaging. From production to shipping, we’re committed to reducing our environmental footprint and creating beautiful pieces that last. We always ship, never airfreight.

At Frafra, we are committed to building lasting, equitable relationships with artisan communities in Northern Ghana. We ensure fair and transparent pricing, based on local market benchmarks, and invest in long-term partnerships that value skill, culture, and dignity. A portion of our profits supports the Frafra Foundation, which funds education, healthcare, and community development. We see every basket as an opportunity to honour craft, empower livelihoods, and create meaningful, sustainable change. Read more about the Frafra Foundation below.

The Frafra Foundation is a long-term initiative created to support the wellbeing and development of artisan weaving communities in Northern Ghana. Funded by a committed percentage of Frafra Baskets’ profits, the Foundation supports projects chosen in collaboration with local weavers, based on need and community impact. Priorities include access to clean water through new well installations, agricultural training and tools, higher education scholarships, improved community spaces, health insurance access, and the development of eco-friendly dye practices. These projects are designed to be practical, inclusive, and deeply rooted in the voices and needs of the community. Oversight is provided by the Frafra team in Ghana and the UK, with progress tracked and published through annual impact reports. By reinvesting into the people behind every basket, the Frafra Foundation ensures that growth is shared, ethical, and community-led.
The Foundation is overseen by an independent board.
